Do you wear headphones?

August 2, 2010 1 comment

I’m sitting in Sky Harbor right now, awaiting my flight to San Jose. Like any airport, it’s noisy. The guy next to me is watching a Star Trek DVD in between sending emails and making business calls on his Blackberry. Behind me a lady is chatting away about far too many personal details than she [...]

Sometimes You Gotta Run

I’m just about to head back to the airport and fly home to Phoenix. I spent an extra day in southern California with my cousins after my speaking engagement Monday night. I’ve mentioned their awesome kids before. It’s always a joy to be with them.
Yesterday, just before an afternoon that included a trip to the [...]

Who’s Your Sound Guy?

I just got back from several days in Orlando, Florida for the National Speakers Association Annual Convention. In addition to taking some time for my own professional development, I had the chance to speak at the NSA Youth Program, presenting to some really awesome students who know speaking (their parents are members of NSA). I [...]

Yesterday, I saw Nike’s new advertisement for the 2010 World Cup. You can watch it here:

I really like the ad, especially the Wayne Rooney section where he pictures his life defined by a bad play and makes the decision to change it.
I’ve been thinking a lot about our life stories or our personal narratives over [...]

Adorable Appreciation

A friend of mine posted this video link on facebook today.

I’ve watched the video a few times now at first for a good laugh (the little girl is undeniably cute), but then with some introspection. I can’t remember the last time I truly rambled off a big list of those things I’m grateful for. If [...]

Up Up Down Down Left Right Left Right B A Start
It’s known as The Code. If you owned the original Nintendo, you knew it. You may not own the game Contra, but you knew The Code. My cousin taught it to me. At first I didn’t believe him. How could a series of buttons during [...]

I went a bit deeper into my iTunes playlist last night and dug out one of my favorite albums from the late 90’s. Sure decksanddrumsandrockandroll might not trigger major memories for most of you, but it’s an album I definitely listened to on a regular basis during my freshmen year of college. History Repeating was [...]

1000 Awesome Things

While in Toronto on Sunday, I had a nice dinner visit with some of the people I worked with at the Sundance Film Festival this past January. It was really nice to catch up with them and hear about the amazing things taking place in their lives. As the evening progressed, the conversation went down [...]

I’m sitting right now at the Toronto International Airport getting ready to fly home. It’s the third time I’ve flown out of this airport in the last six months. I’m a huge fan of the whole airport–it’s beautifully laid out with high ceilings and natural light lining the way, clean and accurate signs and directing [...]

Be the Porter

While eating lunch today, I read Emile Hirsch’s Kilimanjaro, By a Hair blog article. It was an interesting read, a bit graphic on the ingrown hair battle he faced, but a nice testament to the adversity Kilimanjaro presents and the reason he climbed.
One part really jumped out to me. Hirsch writes:
“There’s about 200 porters waiting [...]
