Airport Encounters

So I travel a lot. I think I’ve probably bored all of you with anecdotes about planes or rants about frequent flyer programs.

Still, travel is part of my life. A regular part.

Most of the time, I simply zone out in the airport…
…reading a book…
…playing on facebook…
…listening to a podcast…
…watching a dvd…

but every now and then, my trip is a little different. Every now and then I run into a fellow speaker on the road.

Right now, I’m sitting in the Sacramento airport, awaiting my flight home after just watching my good friend and mentor, Phil Boyte, board his flight to his next speaking engagement.

It was quite a surprise. I was talking on the phone with a friend, and a guy pumps into me. I look up and it’s Phil with a big smile on his face. We stood and visited for about 15 minutes, catching up on life, work, and a few fun plans.

I really enjoyed the conversation and his smiling face was a welcomed surprise.

And yet, as I sit here, I realize it’s been several months since I had even given him a call. We’ll exchange an email now and then, but that’s about it. Life gets busy, and that one little thing gets forgotten.

So here’s the deal…

Don’t get too busy this week.
Pick one friend or mentor.
Give her a call.

Better yet–meet up in person–and visit over a cup of coffee or a meal.

Don’t put it off to chance.

I’ve been on over 600 flights in the past decade and I can count the number of speakers I’ve run into at the airport on one hand. Be proactive.

I had a short 15 minute conversation with Phil, and my day just got that much better.

Chances are it might make your friend’s day too.

Thanks, Phil.
